Australia's North West

AustraliasNorthWest

Edging the Territory, it’s difficult not to be seduced by this beautiful western neighbour. Closest to the border are the Bungle Bungles in Purnululu National Park; huge orange and black-banded domes that were 20 million years in the making. Europeans have only known about the site since the 1980s, making it one of the oldest untouched natural wonders in the world. This part of the Kimberley is believed to be about 360 million years old and is filled with ancient Aboriginal rock art, most of it hidden deep within the ranges.

Many travellers follow the famed Gibb River Road through vast, dry plains dotted with bizarre-looking Boab trees and turn off for glimpses of the rugged coastline, home to the powerful Mitchell Falls.

The long, and often rough journey is rewarded when you arrive at coastal Broome and dip your toes in its crystal clear waters
