Birdlife at Kakadu (Tourism NT)
Regional Northern Territory
The Top End enjoys a tropical climate year round with two very distinct seasons. Early May to mid September is the Dry season with the Green (Wet) season commencing in October through to May, the best time of year to see the region at its most fertile. Most tours and attractions operate year round however due to restricted road access some destinations can close seasonally between December and May.
World Heritage Listed Kakadu National Park, almost 20,000 square kilometres in size, is one of Australia’s most prized cultural and natural treasures. The park is almost three hours drive east from Darwin. Discover the famous Yellow Water Billabong, Jim Jim and Twin Falls and the indigenous rock art at Nourlangie Rock and Ubirr.
Located in the middle of Australia’s northern coast and bounded by Kakadu National Park, the Arafura Seas and the Gulf of Carpentaria, is the vast area of Arnhem Land, owned by the traditional Aboriginal people.
South of Darwin is Litchfield National Park, 1,500 square kilometres of largely
untouched landscape including lush monsoon forests, magnetic termite mounds, unusual rock formations and breathtaking waterfalls. Litchfield National Park is a favourite among Darwin’s outdoor lovers and located outside the park’s entrance is the small township of Batchelor, the gateway to Litchfield.
Melville and Bathurst Islands, known as the Tiwi Islands, are located just 50 kilometres north of Darwin. Discover the beautiful landscapes of dense rainforests, sandy beaches and rock pools. The Tiwi Islanders are creative artists who produce distinctive and valuable art. Be transported into the modern lives of one of the world’s oldest living cultures.
