Classic Larapinta Trek
Operated By: World Expeditions
| Duration: 6 Days
The classic Larapinta Trek takes in the beauty of the Larapinta Trail in all its glory. Known as one of the best walks in Australia, over the years the word has spread, making it World Expeditions most popular trek. With small groups and a support vehicle which meets you every night with your camping gear, you are able to concentrate purely on your hike and the magnificence of the Larapinta Trail.
Day 1: Telegraph Station to Wallaby Gap (14km) We pick you up from your accommodation between 7-7:30am. Our walking commences from the Alice Springs Telegraph Station, which marks the beginning of the Larapinta Trail. The stone buildings here date back to 1872 and they housed the first Europeans to live in Central Australia. The trail initially winds among boulders of Alice Springs granite, the highest of which offer fine views of the town and Mount Gillen. The rail then passes through witchetty bush and mulga scrub, over exposed hills and shady woodlands, before we arrive at the deep narrow passage of Wallaby Gap and either transfer or walk to our exclusive permanent camp.
Day 2: Ti Tree Camp - Simpson's Gap (10km) and Standley Chasm Loop Walk From our exclusive wilderness camp we follow the trail west through magnificent shady Bloodwoods and tall Ironwoods, the dominant trees on this narrow alluvial flat. We may catch sight of a shy Echidna or Black-footed Rock Wallaby as we approach Simpson's Gap. A short transfer takes us to the stunning Standley Chasm where we undertake a spectacular loop walk including an exciting descent through the rugged heart of Standley Chasm. We then transfer to our exclusivewilderness campsite.
Day 3: Ellery Creek to Serpentine Gorge (14 km) Today we are walking through the vertical-spined dolomite country of the Bitter Springs formation. These 800 million year old rocks contain fossilised stromatolites, the cyanobacteria that were amongst the first life on this earth. The trail is again through woodlands and spinifex. Arriving mid afternoon at our well appointed permanent camp provides an opportunity to relax or wander at leisure around the hills of our campsite.
Day 4: Serpentine Gorge to Serpentine Bush Camp (15km) The highlight of this day is the 5km ridge walk to Count's Point from where can be seen the 4 highest peaks west of the Great Dividing Range. As well for the first time we can see the comet impact crater, Gosse Bluff, a feature of the landscape for the next few days. The descent to camp is through an old forest of Hill Mulga, on to a ridge of dolomite rich in fossil stromatolites, then walking in to exclusive permanent camp.
Day 5: Mount Sonder (16km) This morning we are up early for our ascent of Mount Sonder (known as the pregnant lady by the local Anangu Aboriginal people). An early start allows us to climb in the cool morning air, before the sun heats up the landscape. To sight the views of the country from the top and knowing we have just climbed one of the highest peaks west of the Great Dividing Range is a memorable moment of the trip and is ample reward for the effort involved in getting there. we return to our exclusive permanent camp.
Day 6: Ormiston Pound Walk (8km) to Alice Springs The Ormiston Pound offers some extraordinary scenery and wildlife. Our final walk explores the upper reaches of the gorge and the chance to see the many Rock Wallabies as they scamper about the imposing cliffs. Having explored the highlights of the Larapinta Trail, we drive back in to Alice Springs, concluding around 4 or 5pm.
