Barunga Festival

Close Indigenous interaction filled with dreamtime stories, culture, sport and a whole lot of music is what the annual Barunga Festival is all about. Held in a remote Aboriginal community about four hours drive from Darwin, this is one of the longest-running Indigenous festivals in the Northern Territory, and is staged over the long weekend in June.

There’s a good mix of traditional and contemporary activities, allowing you to get to know the local Jawoyn people. There are didjeridu workshops and performances, dance, arts and crafts demonstrations and exhibitions, bush tucker tastings and spear throwing sessions. There’s also a battle-of-the-bands event, giving you a taste of contemporary indigenous music, plus a concert put on by some of the Territory's top Indigenous bands.

Don’t miss going on the storytelling walk with Jawoyn elders, or the opportunity to purchase art direct from the local artists. As stars prick the sky, return to your campsite in the community and recharge for the next day.
