Gunbalanya Open Day with Territory Discoveries

Travellers are invited to experience the rich Aboriginal culture of the Northern Territory at the Gunbalanya (Oenpelli) Open Day on Saturday 23 August 2008. 3 hours drive from Darwin, the Kunwinjku speaking people of Western Arnhem Land have welcomed visitors to their land for over 20 years to share in the diverse range of activities taking place. The day’s program commences from 8am and includes Injalak art, didgeridoo playing, bush tucker, a football carnival and the highly popular rock art tours with local guides, as well as a new film component. After 5pm, visitors can rock along with local bands Wildflower, the Manmoyi Hip Hop Band and Nabaralek and afterwards are permitted to camp in the Merle camping ground near the East Alligator River. Permits to enter Arnhem Land are not required for this event, however it is advised that the East Alligator River is not crossed between the hours of 1.45pm and 3.30pm on the day. No alcohol is allowed to be brought in and visitors are requested to respect the country and not stop on the road but drive directly into Gunbalanya.
