Located in the heart of the World Heritage Listed Kakadu National Park is the Yellow Water Billabong. If you are going to go to Kakadu, then the Yellow Water Billabong cruise is an absolute must! I will never forget sitting in the open air boat, there was a gentle breeze waffling through, made from moving over the water and keeping us cool. The tour guide was keeping his ever watchful eye out for the wonderful range of bird life that inhabits the billabong, as well as for the crocodiles that thrive there in this unique wilderness.
Apparently there are 300 plus crocodiles in the area that the two hour cruise covers, that’s one every five metres! We saw at least 50-60 this day, one crocodile snapped up a large bird standing on the side of the river bank, and then later, we were fortunate enough to see two crocodiles fighting each other, most probably over territory, even the tour guide was excited to see that one (unfortunately they seem to come to an amicable agreement). Right beside Yellow Water Cruise is a property called Gagudju Lodge (Kakadu is the European version of the word Gagudju), the resort is large and has a fabulous lagoon style pool, a great outback type bar (Barra Bistro), as well as Mimi Restaurant. We had a fantastic meal at Mini restaurant where they serve the food you would expect…kangaroo, crocodile, barramundi etc, and from April to October there are live bands and the open-air Cooinda cinema.
