Top End Croc Spotting

Onto the boat and off we went, I counted far more then the two or three crocodiles I expected. I even saw one having a feed of what was once a beautiful looking Barramundi – not that I was going to argue with the Crocodile for it!

This, my friends, is Croc Country!

When I was in Kakadu I decided to be a bit tough and go Croc Spotting. I’ve watched Crocodile Dundee enough times to know what to do! I figured I’d probably see two or three, and that would be it…

I’d heard about this little billabong in Kakadu, called Yellow Waters, where I could go for a cruise, see my two or three crocodiles, birds and some other wildlife. I thought ‘yep this will be good, but I bet the crocs are just set up for the tourists…’

I got to the wharf and walked out to the boats. There was a warning sign saying to beware of the crocodiles with a no swimming sign there also. Walking along the board walk, I looked down into the weed on the edge of the billabong and saw these two darks eyes looking back up at me – yep, definitely no swimming here!

Onto the boat and off we went, I counted far more then the two or three crocodiles I expected. I even saw one having a feed of what was once a beautiful looking Barramundi – not that I was going to argue with the Crocodile for it!

This, my friends, is Croc Country – we are but dinner guests!

I thought I'd add a little here! I was in Katherine 18 months ago and our tour guide decided to put Rogue the Movie on while we were driving down from Darwin. So just after we watched a movie about a giant croc who terrorises a group of tourists, we boarded the same boat at the same jetty that was used in the movie! I tell you...I was feeling a little nervous getting on that cruise!! It was all fine in the end, it's pretty rare they get crocs in Katherine Gorge. I think the guide thought he was pretty funny though!

Hey - where abouts is the jetty that was used in the movie Rogue? It's amazing that when the croc catches a fish, they take it straight onto the land so if they drop it, the fish can't get away. But when they catch land-based prey, they take it straight into the water! I was watching them do this in Kakadu for about an hour. Smarter than they look...!

Who is this Mick Gallagher bloke? Seems to know a bit about the Territory and doesn't write a bad yarn. A shame that this one was a bit short or did the crocs scare him off !! !! !!

I wonder if anyone watched the TV aminal rescue show on tele last night! They were showing a guy mucking about in a swimming pool with a real live saltwater croc! I thought he was at Crocosaurus Cove in downtown Darwin as I have heard that you can swim with the crocs there or go in the Cage of Death - how inviting does that sound! Just a little too up close and personal for my liking - who ever heard of a friendly saltie?

l was up in the Top End mid this year, we saw Croc's all over the place, Katherine Gorge, on the Yellow Waters Cruise (which is a must when travelling to Kakadu), and also in Adelaide River on the Spectacular Jumping Croc cruise, there are heaps of opportunities. On both the cuises you can get up close and personal or keep your distance. Thanks to Territory Discoveries who supplied me with the necessary information our holiday was better then expected. My girls loved the chance to experience the wonders of the Top End.
